How to Get Into the Hairdressing Or Barbering Career - Training Schools and Academy

If you have always enjoyed fashion particularly hair then a career in hairdressing or barbering may be the perfect profession for you. It has many advantages and of course, some disadvantages, but the good far outweighs the bad. Becoming a successful graduate of a hair school of course, it paramount but there are other skills that you must possess as well if you want to be very successful in your career.

You must have the type of character that will allow you to...

a) enjoy meeting and servicing men, women and children. The hair stylist must now be adept at being able to work with clients of both genders. Men frequent beauty salons on a far more regular basis than in the past.

b) you must be able to multi task. Meaning be able to carry on a pleasant conversation with your client while you are working.

c) be flexible in your opinion. Remember in the end the client is always right, so what she wants when it comes to her hair is ultimately her choice. That doesn't mean you cannot or shouldn't give your recommendations. You are the professional, but it's up to the client whether they want to utilize your knowledge or not. In addition, you must listen to what the client is saying to you. Sometimes they are not sure what they want and it's your job to ensure you have understood correctly.

d) A pleasant friendly and positive attitude is a criterion of the job. Without these attributes, you are not going to build much of a client base no matter how good your work is.

e) Maintaining good work ethics such as being punctual and always showing up for work plus remaining calm in complex situations or when pressured.

f) Being creative, keeping an open mind, and willing to take criticism is a characteristic you will have to possess as well.

You should have participated in two levels of your course, one being the basic skills and level two the essential skills. You may also have decided to go to level three being the advanced and management skills.

It's your entry-level position that will allow you to build your skills and experience in your various duties such as consultations, shampoo and conditioning treatment, and various cuts. Then there will be the coloring and perming services you will have to provide. Much of your work will be in blow-drying and styling. You will become experienced at identifying hair and scalp conditions.

Once you have become stabilized in the services you may find that you want to advance to the city and guild level 4 higher profession certificates or diploma in technical salon management, or various degrees in beauty treatment.

Once you have entered into this Industry and taken some advanced courses there are specialties that you can become involved in such as hair and makeup combinations for theatre and movies, or photo shoots.
