Lye Soap - Is Your Skin Care Product Made Out of Drain Cleaner?

Did you know that lye is an essential component in the production of all skin care soaps? This chemical, also known as sodium hydroxide, is extremely caustic and dangerous. In fact, it's such a powerful substance that it's the main ingredient in most drain cleaners.

Lye can easily burn your skin to the bone, and has been the cause of countless emergency room visits throughout the years. How on earth can this seemingly harmful substance have anything to do with keeping your skin healthy?

Believe it or not, despite its damaging characteristics, lye can easily be turned into one of the most mild cleansers through a simple chemical reaction called saponification. In reality, lye soap makes the best skin care product!

How does it work? Do you remember Jr. High chemistry? It's a known fact that when you mix a base with an acid, you form a neutral. During saponification lye (the base) is mixed with an oil (the acid) to form soap (the neutral).

You now know that lye must be the base, but what type of oil can be used as the acid to make this amazing chemical transformation successful? Actually, you can use any everyday cooking oil!

Each one creates somewhat of a different product with different skin care benefits. Some of my favorite soap making oils include avocado oil, olive oil, sweet almond oil and jojoba oil.

Even though lye soap is extremely beneficial to the skin, it is often misrepresented as caustic and drying. This is mainly because people associate lye soap with "grandma's homemade soap" that they used to use as a kid. This was often a terrible experience because of the presence of harsh lye pockets.

You see, if not enough oil (acid) is used during saponification, all the lye is not able to turn into soap which leaves some of it within the bar just waiting to burn your skin. Today, it is a cinch to make soap with pin point accuracy.

To experience the incredible benefits of lye soap, you can either buy homemade lye soap or you can make it yourself. Believe it or not, making soap is a ton of fun and really simple too. Either way, just give lye soap a try... your skin will never be the same!
