Moving Checklist For Buyers

8 WEEKS BEFORE:

If you are currently renting, read your rental agreement to confirm how far in advance you must give notice that you are moving out. 30- 60 days written notice is common. Provide your landlord with notice accordingly.

Prepare a File to Keep Receipts of Moving Expenses for possible Reimbursements or Tax Deductions. Talk to your accountant on this matter for whether or not these deductions apply to you.

Make Moving Arrangements:

• If you plan to use a moving service, get estimates from moving companies, arrange method of payment and secure your moving date(s).
• Moving & storage companies
• If you plan to move yourself, enlist the help of reliable friends, arrange for transportation or van/truck rentals if necessary
• U-haul Canada
• Budget Truck Rentals
• If the closing on the sale of your old house, and possession of your new house are not coordinated, you will need to make arrangements to store your possessions and have accommodations for the period of time between the move out date and the move in date.

6 WEEKS BEFORE:

Begin Sorting & Organizing

• Begin sorting through your closets and collect things you wish to give away to charities.
• Call the charity of your choice to arrange for pick up of your wanted belongings or drop off your items at any Calgary GoodWill Donation Center
• Make Any Necessary (if any) Repairs to Your Current Home as per the Purchase Contract
• Transfer or Resign Any Club Memberships You May Have
• If You Are Moving Yourself, Get Your Moving Supplies Prepared
• Supplies: Packing paper, pad for inventory, markers, boxes, twine, tape, etc.

4 WEEKS BEFORE:

• Notify your utilities (water, natural gas and/or electric) company(ies) to change address & arrange for your meter to be read on the day of your move, have your existing service to be cancelled and resumed at your new home upon move-in

• Contact your bank to transfer your accounts to the branch most conveniently accessible from your new location & update your address

• Change driver´s license. If you get pulled over after your move you could get a ticket for the wrong address

2 WEEKS BEFORE:

• Verify that all paperwork and financing is in order by contacting your lawyer, mortgage broker, real estate agent etc.
• Verify your moving date with your real estate agent
• Arrange care for your children and/or pets during the busy days of packing, loading and moving in.
• Use up as many of your perishable food items as possible

1 WEEK BEFORE:

• Confirm moving arrangements with moving companies, friends, transportation rental company etc.
• Set aside and label any items that you do not want to have packed away.
• Drain fuel from the lawnmower and other machinery. Safely dispose of all gasoline, matches, paints, aerosol cans. For instructions on how to properly dispose of dangerous goods

• Take down curtains, blinds, rods, shelves and other chattels not included in the purchase contract, that are to be moved.
• Prepare a list of items you'll need immediately at your new home such as a flashlight, light bulbs, toilet paper, cleaning supplies, snacks and drinks.
• Confirm transfer of services with utilities and other service providers.
• Begin any cleaning and tidying that needs to be done to ensure your home is left in good condition

DAY BEFORE MOVE:

• Clean out the fridge
• Clean stove/oven
• Clean microwave
• Perform any other miscellaneous cleaning/tidying that needs to be done
• Ensure everything is packed, labeled and ready to go for moving day
• Make or confirm arrangements with your REALTOR(R) to pick up the keys to your new home

MOVING DAY:

Before You Leave Your Old Home:

• Ensure all lights are turned off
• Ensure all appliances are turned off or unplugged as necessary
• Check all rooms, closets, shelves, garage, outdoor areas etc. to see that all boxes, and items have been packed
• Ensure all windows and doors are locked
• Meet with your REALTOR(R) and get the keys to your new home

At Your New Home:

• Perform a thorough walkthrough of your new home with your REALTOR(R) to ensure everything is in good order and as per the purchase contract
