The word 'paraben' may sound more like a story you read somewhere...hang on, that's a parable. Or could it be that strong-smelling liquid that's used for lamps and in wax? No, that's paraffin. But paraben is a word that's becoming commonly heard these days, especially in relation to paraben-free skincare products.
Think about it; skincare products used to comprise the odd face cream and shaving cream in your bathroom shelf not so long ago. Hey, take a look at those tubes and jars almost bursting out of your cabinet these days. Are you buying new products that promise you all sorts of benefits? But I'll bet you are not looking at the preservatives that may be in them nor the paraben-free skincare choices available to you.
That's what parabens are used for; they preserve the fragrance and purity of those commercially produced moisturizers, creams, lotions gels, perfumes and aftershaves that you and your family love to use. Parabens, to tell you the truth, are not completely bad for you. And they have been around for a long time now. But its only now when they have been discovered in breast cancer tumours, and in body fluids that the question of paraben-free skincare products has become important.
It isn't hard to see why they are there in your bodies. We apply skincare products on all parts of the body, and since that includes shampoos and conditioners, that means your hair is involved as well. With the kind of interest we all feel in our continued good health, it's pretty easy to see why paraben-free skincare products are becoming more popular. Commercial manufacturers of cosmetics now appear more and more like villains, and ones wearing oily smiles at that!
It's not difficult to understand their point of view though. I mean, their products wouldn't be worth much if they smelled downright bad when opened, or had a nasty green tinge of fungal growth. And of course, their products would be costing us that much more if they had to research ways of avoiding paraben use. So we are left to look around for alternatives.
