A Rottweiler is one of the most loyal dogs you can own. From birth, they protect, serve, and love their owners. But, a Rottweiler can be very aggressive if not introduced to social situations. Not knowing when and how to train your Rottweiler can result in very serious injuries for you, a loved one, or a complete stranger. Make sure you know the facts about a Rottweiler puppy before deciding to own one:
• Training your Rottweiler puppy should start immediately when you bring him/her home. Typically, puppies are able to leave the litter for a new home between 8 and 10 months.
• Start with name recognition. Choose a simple 2-syllable name for your puppy and use it as much as you can throughout the day. Only use his/her name however for positive things. If you are trying to scold him/her for something, try not to use their name.
• Make sure you train your dog to walk on a leash. Remember you have a Rottweiler puppy and he/she is going to be very large one day. It can be dangerous if he/she cannot walk on the leash.
• Potty training is easy with a Rottweiler because of the desire to please and the intelligence level of the breed. Choose a spot, point, and repeat a phrase like "Go Potty," "Go do business," or something similar. Being consistent and bringing him/her to the same spot, pointing, and repeating the same exact phrase will make the potty training process simple.
• It is extremely important to train a Rottweiler not to bite. These large dogs sometimes hurt people unintentionally. If the Rottweiler puppy is biting or nipping, let out a loud yelp and he/she should stop. Make sure to repeat this each time your Rottweiler puppy is biting someone. Failing to do this can be very dangerous.
